Experience with NICE

NICE is a wonderful organization and doing service work for them was a great experience. The service activities brought to life what NICE really does as a whole. The service opportunities we were able to be a part of were really eye opening and gave me a good understanding of what a refugee faces. The service project on Halloween was a lot of fun! Seeing all the kids that NICE has helped and how happy they were all playing together made everything come full circle. Seeing the joy on all the kids faces from the simplest thingsmade me realize how amazing the work NICE does truly is. Being involved and helping NICE in all the ways we are capable of is worth it because of how much it helps the outcome for these families.

The projects we worked on in the classroom for NICE really helped with my business skills. Working on their marketing materials and grant proposals brought out my business skills I’ve been developing for three years now. It also helped with learning what type of writing you need when writing for a non-profit. Setting up a blog site to post about things the class has done and accomplished this semester was an awesome project to be able to create. It is also a great way for NICE to market the kind of volunteer work that they need help with.

The projects we did inside the classroom were really enjoyable because I feel like as a whole group we really accomplished something. The materials we were able to come up with as a class and within our groups, I hope NICE will be able to apply in there marketing materials and when applying for grants. We all worked really hard to do all we could to help the organization, with the time we had to do so. It is a wonderful organization and I’m extremely grateful we got the opportunity to be able to work so closely with them.

Before this class I didn’t have much of an understanding on what a refugee went through to get to America or what they have to go through after arriving here. NICE does amazing things for the refugees who come here. They help with the struggle these people face when coming to a place where they don’t know anyone or even the language in some cases.

The service-learning aspect of Professional Writing was amazing but a little difficult at times. The work we did for NICE I really hope was beneficial to them. The only issue was having the service part of it be at such weird times. Making it to service opportunities wasn’t always the easiest with scheduling. Although there was nothing that could’ve been done about it, it would’ve been nice have been able to volunteer and work more with the organization.
